Help or Hurt: What is Habitica?
Habitica is a free, open-source project dedicated to helping people improve their lives by gamifying your goals. That was actually the fatefull Google search that changed everything: "Gamify your goals". The idea is that progress in life = progress in game. I was lucky to have found Habitica, for now, 4 months in, I've found my motivation and productivity boosted by 502.8%!
So, how does it work? It breaks things down into four basic "task" categories: Habits, Dailies, To-Dos, and Rewards. Habits have no set schedule. You can score them positively (this gives you in-game rewards), and negatively (this harms your little digital avatar). Dailies are sort of like a to-do list of things you must do each day. Every day at midnight, they reset. To-dos are like dailies, but once you check them off, they are done forever. Rewards allow you to manage how frequently you reward yourself based on how productive you've been.
The approach allows you to play with your friends, get tips from other Habiticans in the community, and generally improve your lifestyle and productivity. The other shocking thing is that this wasn't actually designed for kids: most of it's users are adults ages 18-34, although school children and middle aged+ adults are not uncommon. Furthermore, 40% of its users do not self-identify as "gamers", so it's actually designed for the everyday person.
From battling monsters and raising bear cubs to executing quests and collecting gear, Habitica is a truly unique and interesting RPG-style way to jazz up those client reports. Perhaps you'll surprise yourself and enjoy it as much as I do!
